To arrange legal indemnity insurance on behalf of your client, you must be either:

  • a solicitor
  • a licensed conveyancer
  • a legal executive
  • an individual working under the supervision of one of the above

You must also be working for a firm authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), or registered (or in the process of being registered) as an ancillary insurance intermediary, to undertake insurance distribution business.

We can’t conduct business directly with members of the public – any enquiries must be passed through a solicitor, legal executive or licensed conveyancer.

We’re not permitted to offer advice on the policy limit required for individual cases. For further information, please refer to the UK Finance Mortgage Lenders' Handbook.

We include an escalator clause on most of our standard policies for existing residential and commercial properties, which automatically increases the policy limit by a compounded rate of 10% each year, subject to a maximum of 200% of the original limit.

You must provide a demands and needs statement to your clients when recommending insurance such as a legal indemnity policy, as per regulatory requirements set out by the Solicitors Regulatory Authority and the Council of Licensed Conveyancers. A demands and needs statement should outline to the client their insurance requirements based on the information they’ve provided.

We include a template demands and needs statement with every quote, which you can use and adapt as much as you like. You can also download a copy here.

Of course. Just sign in to ICON and visit the Your quotes and policies page, where you can search for quotes obtained by your colleagues. You can then order cover as you normally would.

ICON can provide an instant quote for a wide variety of complex legal indemnity enquiries, but should a human touch be required, you'll be prompted to submit your enquiry for referral at the end of the quote process. All the details you've provided will then be sent to one of our specialist underwriters, who will contact you within 15 minutes (9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday) to discuss your enquiry further. ICON will show who is handling your enquiry and when they will contact you.

The first person from your firm to register will automatically become a firm administrator, who will be able to:

  • register new users
  • add new office locations
  • update your firm's details
  • assign roles to other users, giving them access to additional site features

The firm administrator role can also be assigned to someone else, providing that person is registered for ICON.
